No business can survive by giving everything away. But there are ways of structuring a business so that certain things can be offered free of charge, to the overall benefit of the customer. Consider the price of our home heating oil. We add 1.5 cents to the price of every litre of heating fuel so that we can provide no charge labor on all burner service (under normal operating conditions), which includes a periodic tune-up and efficiency test. This no charge periodic tune-up and efficiency test is of utmost importance to you because it provides for peak furnace operating efficiency. If we can't contact a customer by phone, we will contact them by mail, advising them that we want to set up an appointment to provide this no charge tune-up and efficiency test. Our customers may also contact us to set up an appointment (726-1680). Our customers benefit because this no charge burner labor is worth substantially more than the small premium on the cost of heating fuel, and they save by burning less fuel because of a more efficient heating system. However, the environment also benefits in two ways. Because their heating units are more efficient, customers burn less fuel and therefore contribute less to global warming. At the same time, a more efficient furnace or oil heater reduces the amount of harmful emissions in the atmosphere. |
